Harmonious Living Amendment Act of 2021 Explainer Graphics

The Harmonious Living Amendment Act of 2021 proposes a series of laws that protect DC music venues and outdoor performers from noise complaints. When residential buildings in entertainment areas lack adequate sound proofing, noise complaints can push music venues and outdoor performers out of the city. This proposed Act includes a series of laws that would prevent this from happening.

As part of my thesis I’ve been working with the DC Music Stakeholders Coalition, a group of musicians, venue owners, and music organizations working together to protect the DC music community. I was tasked by this group to create explainer graphics which simplify and visualize this proposed legislation to be shared with the public and gain wider support.

For the explainer Instagram image carousel, I illustrated a cover page as well as icons that represent each of the 4 elements of the Act. The vibrant purple was chosen to represent nightlife and positive change. I employed a round, friendly typeface Filson Soft to match the pro-entertainment tone of the Act.
DC venues, music organizations, and council members shared the graphics I created on Instagram to inform the public and gain support for the Act. It was an honor to partner with DC music advocates and DC government officials to visualize this proposed legislation.
